Nilgiri Tahr is an endangered species of mountain goat. These unique animals inhabit grasslands at an elevation of 4000 to 8000 feet in the southern Western Ghats and can climb steep hills and cliffs. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Due to hunting and poaching its total population was about 100 at the turn of the 20th century. Nearly half (around 600-700) of the world population of this extinction-prone mountain goat is found in Eravikulam National Park, This animal was photographed at Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park, 45 minutes drive from Munnar, Kerala.
